I gave up hakfway through Series 2. The slapstick and silly factor got too strong. People were just being silly to the extreme, presumably to extract humour. I assume it's not a kids' programme, and I assume even teens have some sort of sophistication.....but hey what does and old fart like me know?

Score: 9/10 A Masterclass in Misfit Chemistry and Merchant's Singular Voice I don't think any show that Stephen Merchant has had anything to do with has ever disappointed me. From *The Office* to *Extras* to this, his signature blend of awkward comedy, social observation, and unexpected warmth is unmistakable. In *The Outlaws*, he ties together a group of individuals that are so different, but it works beautifully. I was disappointed when it ended... because I wanted to see more of these characters! The Premise: Community Service as Crucible The setup is deceptively simple: seven strangers from vastly different walks of life are forced together to complete a community payback sentence in Bristol. There's Rani (Rhianne Barreto), a privileged student; Christian (Gamba Cole), a young man trying to escape a drug gang; John (Darren Boyd), a repressed, middle-class businessman; Gabby (Eleanor Tomlinson), a disgraced aristocrat; Myrna (Clare Perkins), a radical activist; Greg (Merchant himself), a lonely, well-meaning lawyer; and Frank (Christopher Walken), an American conman with a mysterious past. What begins as a sentence becomes something else entirely when they stumble upon a bag of cash and find themselves in the crosshairs of a local drug lord. The plot is genuinely gripping a blend of comedy, crime thriller, and character drama that keeps you guessing. But the plot is ultimately secondary to the real draw: watching these seven people, who have nothing in common, slowly, awkwardly, and often hilariously become a kind of family. The Characters: Merchant's Greatest Gift Merchant has always had a gift for writing people who are flawed, petty, and deeply human, and *The Outlaws* is his richest ensemble yet. Each character is given space to breathe, to reveal their vulnerabilities, and to surprise you. The humour comes from their clashes class, race, age, politics but so does the heart. As one reviewer put it, "Each of the characters has something to like, something to sympathise with, something to dislike and something to laugh about". Christopher Walken is a particular delight as Frank, bringing his signature deadpan menace and unexpected tenderness to the role. Jessica Gunning is brilliant as the uptight, wannabe cop supervisor Diane. And Merchant himself, wisely, doesn't make Greg the hero or the centre he dips in and out, adding comic relief while letting the ensemble shine. The Tone: Comedy-Drama, Not Sitcom It's worth noting, as many fans have pointed out, that *The Outlaws* is not a sitcom. If you come expecting *The Office* style cringe comedy, you may be surprised. It's a dramedy a blend of genuine tension, action, and emotion with Merchant's signature style of self deprecation, irony, and social observation. The situations are often comedic, but the stakes are real, and the show never shies away from darker territory. Why Not a 10? The only reason this isn't a perfect score is that the show's pacing can occasionally meander, and some subplots are stronger than others. But these are minor quibbles in a series that is otherwise a joy from start to finish. The Verdict *The Outlaws* is Merchant at his best: funny, humane, and quietly profound. It's a show about unlikely connections, second chances, and the messy, beautiful business of being human. If you love character driven comedy-drama with a bit of edge, this is essential viewing. Watch if: You love Stephen Merchant's work, enjoy ensemble dramas about misfits finding family, or simply want to spend time with characters you'll genuinely miss when it's over. Skip if: You're expecting a pure laugh-a-minute sitcom or prefer your crime dramas without the comedy. This is something richer and stranger than either.
