At first, I thought the show was titled "Crystal Lake" due to copyright issues. This show is called Crystal Lake because of its extremely loose association with the TV series. If you are watching this movie because you are expecting an extension of the original movies, you should avoid this at all costs. If you have no connection to the movies whatsoever and want a small-town drama with obnoxious characters and a semi-literate sheriff, this is the perfect series for you.

"The trees are green, the water is blue..." Her isolation within the Crystal Lake community is upended by the arrival of the local police chief's journalist sister, who is investigating a string of unusual deaths. As they dig into Pamela's past, a disturbing chain of events comes to light, unearthing the town's darkest secrets and chronicling the psychological descent that would transform a grieving mother into the infamous killer of the classic "Friday the 13th". The wait is finally over, and the result is a masterpiece of true-crime atmosphere and psychological horror. Produced by the prestigious A24 studio for Peacock, "Crystal Lake" achieves the seemingly impossible: reinventing the origins of one of the most iconic slasher franchises in history, steering clear of B-movie clichés to deliver a drama with devastating emotional depth and that essential retro vibe. Linda Cardellini’s performance is nothing short of monumental, masterfully guiding us from pure empathy for a broken mother's grief to the utter discomfort triggered by her obsession and mental instability. Cardellini redefines the role, imbuing the character with a tragic humanity that chills you to the bone. Furthermore, "Crystal Lake’s" oppressive cinematography envelops the viewer in 1970s rural New Jersey, while the wise decision to rely entirely on practical gore effects pays organic tribute to the franchise’s 1980 roots, successfully dodging the coldness of modern CGI. I was never a fan of commercial slashers—and by extension, the Friday the 13th saga—but this series isn't just a prequel for franchise die-hards. It is, in truth, a profound character study on maternal grief, community isolation, and the breeding ground of pure evil. I believe it ranks among the best television productions of the year, expanding the "Friday the 13th" mythos with an elegance, maturity, and style that its cinematic counterparts and their sequels never quite managed to capture.
